I remember sometimes I do struggle like, what does a teenager think like?

And so I'll go to my journal.

But then I'll be like, no, I cannot shape a teenager based on my journal entries.

June, teenage year was just like super emotional and the world is ending and it's just a bit too much.

But I think teenagers, especially in like the 19th century, for example, teenagers then are very different from teenagers now because

I mean, I think the concept of teenage years, it's relatively modern, I guess.

Yeah, I would think so.

So I treat them as just individuals, young individuals.

And so they experience a lot of first experiences.

And at the same time, I think because I was a teenager who grew up, because I left Korea when I was a teenager, right?

And I didn't grow up with my parents.

I love them, but I didn't grow up with them.

And so I experienced...

experienced where I felt like I had to bear a lot of responsibilities early on and so I think I'd kind of take the experience that I went through personally as a teen and I kind of yeah but I don't really think like oh how do I write through the lens of a teenager I usually just focus on like the characters as young individuals who are experiencing

a lot of the bleakness and injustice of life for the first time.

Ooh.

Um, I, so my debut novel,

I think it was really dark and when I wrote about violence it was very graphic and in my head I thought if I want to be considered a serious writer I need to write dark things and there should be no romance in it.

So while I'm very proud of my debut novel I've grown in the sense that I learned

Like as much, if you want to explore something that's very dark, I think it's also very important to balance it with humor.
