Appearances
a small handful of self-published Korean historicals, and then very few actual traditionally published.
But then one I did find was a historical fantasy, YA historical fantasy set during the ancient Korean period.
And it was Ellen Oh's Prophecy series.
And so I think reading that book kind of gave me the courage to consider even writing my own.
But yeah, like I just didn't see a lot of books that revolved around Korean history, period.
And so I was like, there's so many books that feel like BBC period dramas, but I don't see any books that read like historical K-dramas, which were really popular even back then.
And so, yeah, it was that feeling of like filling the gap and writing the book I wanted to read.
I have been for most of my writing career, I was under a book a year contract, so I would have to have a book ready to publish every single year.
And it was not easy because I would spend maybe half the year
like frantically researching and writing and drafting and rewriting and then the last half the year I'd have to start promoting it and then as soon as it's published I'm right back on the hamster wheel I'm like drafting again researching and the last half marketing published next book and so it during that period I was just always on my phone writing or marketing and that moment when my daughter was like mom can you put down your phone I was just like oh
I think something just shifted in me where I realized, like, it's kind of morbid, but I'm like, when I'm old and I'm on my deathbed, am I going to look back and be like, I wished I had published more books?
And I realized, no, that's not what I would have wanted.
I would want to look back and be like, I spent great time with my kids, with people I love.
And so when that really struck home, I emailed my agent and I was just like, I cannot write a book a year anymore.
And they got it all official and she called me with my editor.
And I thought there would be some pushback because a lot of authors
especially in the YA space we think we need to write a book a year to stay relevant there's this fear that we're going when we don't write a book a year the space on the shelf for us will disappear yeah and so I told them and but they were so encouraging and they're like yeah like you do not need to write a book a year anymore you've established yourself now you could like write slower and it's been writing a book every two years now has allowed me so much space to just breathe and live life
So it's been, I'm happy with that choice.
