Like the only thing that matters is consent and we're teaching this to children.
In reality though, and this is what I I really want to say this in this episode, because I want to counter misinformation with fact here.
What we do know is that sex and consent education is a proven way to reduce rates of sexual violence and unwanted pregnancy.
There's a report from UNESCO back in 2017 that collated a lot of evidence around comprehensive sexuality education.
And it found that it does not increase sexual activity or sexual risk taking or STDs.
And actually, programs that only focus on abstinence.
They are not effective in delaying young people from having sex.
They're not effective in minimizing the number of sexual partners that they have.
They're not effective in minimizing
sexual risk taking, if that's what these people care about, then they're ignoring the evidence of what actually supports those outcomes.
We also know in Australia that a lot of people, unfortunately, have really misguided ideas about consent.
There is a national survey in Australia that evaluates our attitudes on violence against women.
The last one was in 2021.

It found that twenty percent of respondents either incorrectly thought that rape in marriage was not a criminal offense or were unsure if it was a criminal offense.
They didn't know if having sex with someone when they don't consent in marriage is a problem.
