One of my main interests when I report on women in prison is how common abuse histories are.

Some studies have found that up to ninety-four percent of women in prison were sexually or physically abused before they ended up behind bars.

My own work has focused on women who are in prison because they reacted to abuse or assault.

From the first time Quinnetta contacted me, she was talking about this.

What I read in academic reports and found in my research for my book, Unreasonable Women, she saw it all around her.

Everyone she met in prison had their own story of abuse, even if some of them couldn't or wouldn't see it.

One of Quinetta's neighbors in solitary once casually mentioned that her grandfather had sex with her starting when she was thirteen.

Quinetta tried to break it to the neighbor.
