So towards the end of 2010, detectives believed that they had a strong idea of what happened to Gareth Williams, and they thought that it had more to do with his personal life than his job.

There are two wildly different stories about Gareth's private life, one from law enforcement and indirectly from the agencies he worked for.

And then the other is from his family.

But let's just start with the law enforcement version of things.

So in the weeks following Gareth's death, police started releasing information hoping to spark tips from the public.

All of it pointed to a secret double life and the possibility that he died during what they called a, quote, sex game.

Which is crazy to start putting that out to the press when it's so unconfirmed.

Immediately.

I mean, we'll get into it, but I hate when people say, like, it was a different time.

I mean, it really... The way that they felt about what we're going to start describing back then was like...

Maybe more vitriolic than they feel now, and so maybe there's like some prejudice there, but let me get into what I'm talking about so people understand.

So in December, four months after his death, they shared eFIT images, which are electronic facial identification technology, of a couple who they said had visited Gareth's apartment in June or July, implying they believed someone else was present when he died.

So the senior officer now in charge, Detective Chief Inspector Jackie Sabir, gave this statement.

Quote, we know he was intensely private and however difficult this might be for someone who has had any interaction with Gareth, it would really help us if they came forward so we know if that side of his life had any relevance to his death.

Police also revealed that he had visited bondage websites with guides on how to tie people up.
