And that was Gareth in math.

His school reached out to Bangor University about 25 minutes away, and they agreed to let Gareth pursue a math degree part-time.

Every week, he took the train all the way to Bangor by himself.

He walked into lecture halls as the only preteen boy in the room, and he went straight home when classes ended.

Gareth did have a couple other hobbies outside of just math, though.

He was always biking around the Welsh countryside and would eventually become a competitive cyclist.

In private conversations with Carrie, Gareth opened up about his passion for things like music and theater, fashion, the arts.

And then at 17 years old in 1996, he graduated from Bangor with first class honors, the highest an undergraduate in the UK can receive.

And at 18, he started a PhD at just 18 years old at the University of Manchester, more than two hours from home, his first time living away from his parents outside of Wales.

He settled in pretty easily, beginning a doctoral dissertation on computer game technology, building models to make light and shade look more realistic in video games.

I mean, this is the mid 90s, so it's still really early on at the time.

Also, it's like the best time in the entire history of the world to get into like computers and video games and stuff like you're just like on such a good path.

Gareth earned his Ph.D.

and he considered going into academia.

In 2000, he began another postgraduate course at St.

Catherine's College in Cambridge, but he dropped out because he was approached by a recruiter from the Government Communications Headquarters, or GCHQ.

That's the UK's cybersecurity and intelligence agency, roughly equivalent to America's NSA.

And they wanted to hire him.

The math that he was using to improve computer graphics turned out to be really useful when it came to code breaking.

Gareth was pretty interested and it fit his personality pretty well to do things like that.
