It is definitely more than financial.
In fact, a good succession planning project starts with the family and has zero quantitative factors associated with it.
So we think about things like what is the purpose of the family before the purpose of its wealth?
What are the goals of the family, the non-financial emotionally driven goals?
What are they trying to achieve long term?
What are their values?
What are their desired behaviours?
What type of story do they want to leave, not to the rest of the world, but to their future children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren?
Those are the beginnings of an intergenerational wealth transfer project that start off with nothing to do with finances, tax or even the underlying investments.
Yeah, sure.
So quite often is the answer to the question.
They are quite often quite disparate in their views.
And really that's because the incumbent generation is a lot more attached to the creation of the wealth, the blood, sweat and tears that it takes to build the wealth and protect it and preserve it.
And what they haven't generally done is taken a deliberate, intentional approach to bring the next generation along with them.
So a typical scenario is where you've got a family of, you know, patriarch and matriarch who have built something.
It could be in any industry, any type of business.
And the kids have just kind of come along.
They don't know any different.
Mum and dad are always in the business, working on the business, creating the wealth.
There's an assumption both ways, parents to kids, kids to parents, as to how we operate as a family.
