We were having a conversation and she said, Why don't you just have a more top down approach?
I mean, that's what I did.
And then you didn't have to spend so much time on these discussions.
So to her, she was thinking that the kids were using up more time than I had.
And then to me, I was thinking she thought that I wasn't asserting enough authority.
And we had a conversation about it.
I just asked her why.
Did it look that way to you as opposed to saying
why are you accusing me of something?
Because I was a little defensive, I will admit, but I really wanted to have a better understanding of why she saw it that way.
And then that helped me respond more thoughtfully and to just talk to her about how I parented without saying
Well when you parented me, you did X, Y, Z.
It was just really opening conversation to understand.
how we communicate and why that's important.
And I told her, I said, you know, since you're a parent, a grandparent, that's a way.
It's good for you to try this style because you'll get more information from the grandkids.
You'll feel like you've spent more time with them and you'll get to know them better.
And I said, just practice it and see how it goes.
And then you can tailor it to fit you.
So giving this openness, this opportunity for her to learn from me without me telling her that her way was wrong, without her telling me that I'm wasting too much time, which is how I initially heard
