And one would have to identify the particular attributes of the generative models in play that must be have this future-pointing agentic aspect in order to qualify or support either consciousness in a very
Vague sense that it could be different levels of consciousness, or if you want to draw a bright line between things that are self-aware or indeed are just aware.
uh in in in a in a phenomenal sense, you'd have to identify what parts of their world model um equip them with the capacity to feel and to uh and to experience.
And then I'll I'll hand over to Mark for what that particular architectural feature uh um would be.
Oh right.
Um yes.
Um so I think before um trying to give you an answer to that question, I think it's important to um to state before we go any further that consciousness, however red,
is not something that you can know of something else.
I mean you know, common sense tells you that that is true, but it's also mathematically true um under the free energy principle, in the sense that the only things you can read
about the internal machinations of an agent.
Are exposed on their Markov blanket or on their um more specifically, the states act upon the world because you are part of the world from the point of view of the agent.
So you can only ever infer something is conscious.
Um, and that requires the observer.
So what I'm doing is is developing a very observational, relational um position, just to acknowledge you you you will never know.
Um
Which is going to be interesting in relation to machine consciousness.
So that means that you know the observer has to have the fantasy, the hypothesis, the construct as part of their expiratory repertoire to make the inference that this thing, i.e.
you, is conscious.
So that puts a special uh if you like, uh it contextualises, I think, discussions about conscious.
Only conscious artifacts can ever recognise consciousness in another.
