Looking at the timings and looking at the locations from which he'd sent the telegrams.

I was already really convinced that he had had basically cheated and taken the train.

And then I sort of went looking for corroborating evidence and I got in touch with an archive in Amsterdam who had some letters from a young engineer who travelled part of the way with Goddard in the spy.

And there's this basically kind of near deathbed confession in a letter that was sent kind of in the nineteen sixties, basically confessing to having cheated and and loaded the car onto the train and then having lied about it ever since.

So the public are becoming really excited.

You know, every time they're moving through a major city, they're being met by by people who know who they are.

And that increasingly they're being met by big crowds.

So by some estimates, there's like six hundred thousand people waiting for the winning vehicle in Paris.

Well, unsurprisingly, perhaps, the man with the wealth and the capacity and who was completely driven and single-minded, he's the one that wins.

So two months nearly to almost to the day after they take off from Beijing, the Italian prince, Prince Gippioni Borghese, roars into Paris, is greeted by this huge crowd.

It was so thick that he can barely move.

People kind of, you know, thrusting babies at him and and there are kind of like swarms of cyclists surrounding the vehicle like a guard of honour.

There's a huge party for him and for kind of followers of of the race and people who are interested in the race.

People are selling tickets, there's fireworks, there's a great meal, there are speeches, there are medals and huge.

huge celebration for the prince for the kind of success of this feat.

The race has, I think, I believe, a real measurable impact on public opinion.

It's so well followed, it, you know, it attracts so much attention.

And you can see opinions changing in real time.

When it's first announced in January, everyone's completely disbelieving.

And then by August, everyone's congratulating them and it's been seen, it's been proven to be a success.
