Well, look, I read this one as a standalone novel and it does work as such, I think, but it's actually the third in a series known as The Country of Others.
which is based in part on her own family history.
And what that means, though, is that the dramatist's persona at the very front of the book is really useful because it gives us a sort of potted history of the main character's family.
But at the heart of it is a woman named Mia, born in Rabat in 1974.
Her grandmother was French, her grandfather was Moroccan,
And her parents are both middle-class Moroccans, with her father a financier and her mother a doctor.
And we come to know most of these people and other members of the family so intimately, so beautifully, Michael.
But it's this character, Mia, who is the sort of filter through which the whole story is told.
Did you have to keep checking back on that overview, though, of the family at the front?
Because I did.
So Mia is the central character.
How do we meet her?
Well, we meet her with this quite intriguing prologue set in 2021.
She's in crisis.
in this period.
She's living in France as a writer.
She's having all these health dramas.
She ends up seeing a neurologist.
And one of the things she says to him is, look, I'm worried I'm losing my memories.
And he says, you never lose your memories.
