Why?
Because I can't stand her.
Ooh, controversial.
But you have an argument, don't you?
I mean, it's about...
what it is that she did with that first novel, A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing.
So what is your problem with it?
This is a writer who writes about
pain and bodies, and I actually think she does it in ways that are quite astonishing.
She also does something very interesting on the page.
Her work often is fragmentary and poetic, and I've only managed to read about 20 pages of this new one, and instantly there is that
same exciting stream of consciousness, poetic style, where you're working out who these figures are.
Will you push on?
I will 100% push on with this.
But I think that question of how, what it means to read pain
on the page, which is something that BJ and I have talked about before, is actually a really interesting one.
And I will respectfully disagree, Your Honour, and think that this is somebody who deals with trauma and history in quite interesting ways, but all of which means that I will keep reading Ema St Bride's The City Changes Its Face, which is published by Faber, and there is...
A really interesting interview with her on ABC Radio National's book show as well that I listened to recently.
But Jonathan and Hannah, I don't think we've heard enough from you two.
So let's move on to the book that you've both read.
