Right.
But there's also a ghost, and that is the ghost of the great Victorian Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, although sometimes referred to by Scots as Robert Lewis Stevenson.
I can't quite bring myself to do that.
You could just call him RLS.
Oh, yeah.
It does sound like a syndrome.
He is a real presence and quite a talkative one.
And it's not by chance that it's RLS.
Robert Louis Stevenson's family were a family of lighthouse designers and builders.
In fact, from the end of the 18th century right up until 1940, the Stevenson family designed and built or were part of building 150 lighthouses along the Scottish coast.
Wow.
And I should have pointed out that the lighthouse on the real Muckleflugger is designed by the Stevenson family, so...
Okay, so we get a prologue, we get a first chapter, which kind of just reiterates what's in the prologue.
But in the third chapter, we get a new location and a new character.
And we are on a bridge.
There is a character called Firth.
And he is committing himself to jumping off the bridge and ending his life.
It's a rather extraordinary moment when he does remember Muckleflugger and make that decision.
