No, it doesn't surprise me, though.
It turns out that this older man stalking Daphne is her stepfather, a man she hasn't seen for decades because not long after a key event in her life as a nine-year-old, he disappeared from her life.
And Eddie, Eddie Triplett by name, who also works in the realm of books and publishing,
an older man of enormous charm who she clearly was devoted to as a child, and then is sort of left out of her life in the subsequent decades, re-enters her life.
And it's fascinating that Patchett makes that setting for the reunion in a museum of antiquities.
It's as if
Daphne and for that matter her husband Jonathan are at that stage in their life where they're wandering through the metaphorical museum of their life through old paintings, old carvings and pieces of furniture that are very important to them but then a living human being from the past emerges and this is always the way memories, things that Daphne has thought about a great deal and things that Daphne hasn't thought about for years come to the surface.
It is a remarkable piece of writing from Patchett.
All three of Daphne's fathers, her actual father, her first stepfather, the aforementioned Mr Triplet.
Interesting that he's called Triplet.
But then Lucas, her third stepfather, who's made his money out of positive thinking publications back before 9-11 destroyed the entire industry and positive thinking became unfashionable.
And of course, he's the most negative and curmudgeonly human being imaginable.
Well, according to the book, the industry for self-help books all fell apart when America became self-conscious again.
You couldn't write books about positivity.
It meant a whole lot of different things on the Lower East Side.
Well, and it's also the gap between the author and the idea or the author and the product is that Lucas is a very negative presence.
