But everything that he and his wife made their money out of was about this constant evocation of happy memories, think positively.
You can see how it's analogous in a Freudian sense to suppressing the things that are uncomfortable.
And Patchett's book's about the opposite.
It's actually about if ever this is a group of people who are in touch with their feelings, in touch with their inner child, in touch with what's going on, they're almost overanalyzed within themselves, at least to my readerly eye.
So I was somewhat taken aback by that aspect of it.
It's about the way our parents can sometimes compartmentalise life on behalf of children and you just go along with it.
And so Daphne's mother, who's described at length as being tall and elegant and beautiful and charismatic, but also a bit of a mess, makes this radical decision that in some way Eddie is responsible for the failure of parenting that is encapsulated in the car accident we're talking about before.
And at that point, she just cuts Eddie out of her life and therefore the children's life as well.
And this is a family that just gets on with it and has got on with it.
It's not just Daphne.
She has a sister as well called Leda.
And they're obviously both named after creatures from mythology or aspects of mythology, both female victims of transformation and the Capri
of the gods.
But then when Daphne and Leta's mother remarries, she marries this Lucas, the self-help man, and she calls her sons Christopher and Matthew.
She abandons all pretense of being a mythological creature and becomes a creature of wasp respectability.
And you get from that that sense is that these women, mother and daughters alike, have reinvented themselves depending on the men in their lives or the relationships that they're in.
And that raises interesting questions because then you find out that Eddie is not quite the man that Daphne remembers him being.
Well, Kate, we should talk about this.
Daphne's at pains to tell us, the reader, just how much she loved and loves this man.
To the point where you're almost, at least I was as a reader, I was frustrated.
