Oh, and it's a great book.
He's an interesting writer.
Some people might know George R. Stewart from his novel that he wrote in the 1940s called Earth Abides, which is one of the very early examples of post-apocalyptic fiction, which is very popular now, the idea of people roaming in America after a civilisation disintegrates.
Well, his 1948 Earth Abides is one of the originals in this particular novel.
and probably still one of the best.
And so if you combine him as this kind of slightly macho novelist, very interested in the end of civilisation, with a detailed analysis of place names, there's an interesting writer for you.
Not completely, obviously.
You wouldn't expect it to, but it's closer than you think.

His sensitivity to the nature of the displacement of the First Nations people of North America is quite profound by any standard, and certainly for
1945.
And there's no sort of American triumphalism.
It's not like it's a celebration of our great achievement as a nation.
Quite the opposite.
What he's saying is that there are things that are eternal and then there are things which are ephemeral and place names are ephemeral.
