And so my kids took that responsibility seriously.

Learn from autistic adults.
Really, unless there's some reason you need a formal diagnosis for disability reasons or legal accommodations at your work, I frankly would not waste the money on formal diagnosis.
I think you're going to learn more from autistic adults than any professionals.
I'm sad to admit that my mental health profession collectively is way behind the times on understanding autistic traits or being able to accurately diagnose people.
