If they mention that a character has an accent, I need to know that kind of thing because I need to make sure that the narrator is able to do that accent.

I was working on a book once where I think the book was around 450 pages long and

And around page 392, they mentioned a character's British accent.

And it was a character who had been in the whole book, not the main character, but it was literally like 50 pages before the end that they mentioned that she was British.

And there were a lot of signs within the book, her kind of

patterns of speech, the expressions that she was using, things like that.

There were a lot of signposts for the reader.

But it's the kind of thing that for an audiobook, you want to confirm, you know, should this character have a British accent or not?

And it wasn't until, you know, the very, very end of the book that it was sort of concretely

established for me the reader that like yes she has she has been British the whole time and so we want to make sure that we're getting a narrator who can do a British accent for it and you cannot make that mistake because you get to a point where in an American accent they would say like this person spoke with a British accent exactly it wouldn't make any sense exactly and then you have to go back and rerecord

like large you know portions of a book so yeah a lot of the prep is that kind of thing and then there's a lot of stuff that just doesn't convert cleanly from print to audio there's a lot of like we see a lot of things like you know a to-do list on a piece of paper that a character might write on page four and then on page 27 that list might repeat with things crossed off on it

But there's no text saying she crossed this off.

It just shows crossed off that they're crossed off.

So we usually work with the author.

I usually offer up suggestions and say whatever kind of within this you think is right and please tweak it as you see fit.

But in that kind of instance, we would say.

you know, she returns to the list and crosses off the first two items and then would repeat what those first two things on the to-do list are.

And then we would probably say, that means what's left is item number three, this thing, item number four, this thing.

So we always aim for word perfect.
