It is currently mid July as I'm writing this, so right now that sounds sort of tragic, but I have a feeling by the time this comes out.
A rainy cool day inside with a book?
will be just what the doctor ordered.
That first story, Swim Platform, was sparked by an overheard conversation in a cafe.
Someone talking about rebuilding theirs after a storm.
I've never set a wet foot on one, but I find them sort of romantic.
The warm wood against your back when you climb out, and the sound of the water knocking against the barrels.
While I didn't have a platform experience, I did have a break wall one.
Growing up on Harsons Island, the waterway was framed with a steel wall with a cap beam on top.
It was about six inches deep or almost exactly the perfect size for me to stand on when I was ten years old and wrap my toes around the warm edge of before yelling cannonball and launching myself.
By the way, I just looked up some of the terminology around steel break walls because I had a feeling there would be something good there.
And
Boom.
A piece of the construction is called the
A dead man anchor.
A large underground concrete structure.
Or supplementary piling.
placed behind the wall.
The tie rods connect to the dead man, using that mass to anchor the wall and prevent it from being pulled forward by water pressure or soil.
So that's something you know now.
