But sometimes you had clues like the work on contract.

There's a really lovely book on contracts and Kiss of Peace within contracts.

And so then I looked through that and where are they going?

Oh, I'll go over there and I'll look at their sources and then you can find nice examples.

So kind of I was guided sometimes by historians, but sometimes I was searching.

And also I've spent 20 years writing about love.

So if you're going to do that, over time you gather up all along the way lots of examples of kisses that you just have in a file and you write for your file and go, oh, that was a good kiss, wasn't it?

And pull them all together.

I think I wanted deliberately to use a wide range of sources.

And also there's lots of very famous kisses in there.

And that is an interesting choice as a historian, because your instinct is often to give completely unknown kisses nobody would have ever heard of.

But I actually thought nobody's really thought about the kiss in this kind of comparative way.

And so perhaps if we use some really famous kisses, it might help the reader contextualise what they're learning.

And so you go, oh, I know that kiss.

Oh, I know the context of that kiss.

Now let me think about what it was doing.

And perhaps you hadn't been thinking about what that kiss was doing previously.

and it's also interesting like when you're talking about an ending kiss right often kisses are the start of something right so if you meet somebody and you decide they're going to be a friend like a friend in that kind of significant sense then they will kiss in a lot of historic literature they'll kiss first right so it's kind of a recognition of a sort of a unity of a friend that is going to become important to you

And so the whole relationship and the contract is the same, right?

A contract is not an end.
