And they're very comfortable with just knowing that it isn't really an erotic kiss.
It is actually just a kiss between two friends while still getting to have a little joke.
And so I guess it's the flexibility that the symbol of the kiss offered to an older audience that kind of has just disappeared really since I'd say about the 1950s.
Well, there's two ways of thinking about kisses with enemies, I guess.
One is because the kiss of peace is how you resolve a conflict, then sometimes enemies do have to resolve the conflict.
And the interesting thing there is, so often they avoid it.
So Thomas Beckett, who is murdered by his king, they were best friends and they fell out.
And so Beckett runs off to Europe and he tries to negotiate a peace and they get all the way down the line in this peace contract.
And except for the king will not kiss him.
He's just like, no, I swore I know, but I would never kiss him.
The pope comes along and says, I have absolved your oath.
You are free to kiss.
Still wouldn't kiss him.
King says, you can kiss my son instead.
I'm happy for the proxy kiss, but not me.
Right.
And everybody's just like, nah, this isn't ever a real contract if he's not prepared to put his mouth to it.
And so eventually Beckett decides just to go back to England anyway.
And literally he's dead within a month.
and so it was kind of true in this way that all of their anxiety was true like the refusal of the kiss did reflect the fact that the king held animosity towards him and did reflect that he wasn't going to guarantee this peace even though he's willing to sign a contract with a signature send his son in for the kiss
