But the kiss was so important, he wouldn't do it.

And it's also interesting that he wouldn't do it, right?

That the kiss can be so, it's not just a promise or a nice gesture.

It's not a kind of light handshake.

It's something that's so important to these people that they just refuse to do it because of what the implications are of betraying your kiss, right?

And so there's kind of the really interesting tensions there are.

Well, I mean, obviously, the Bible presents this really fabulous betrayal of Jesus.

So Jesus is in the Garden of Gethsemane and Judas comes up and kisses him.

And because of that, it signals to the soldiers who Jesus is and he's arrested.

And because he is arrested, he's then executed.

And so that's a really interesting contradiction, I think, in Christianity between the fact that that has to happen.

Because Jesus has to die for us all to be saved, right?

So we all need this tragedy to happen.

But on the other hand, nobody could actually believe betraying Christ.

What kind of person could do that to a God?

Imagine betraying a God.

And so it just actually dominates the artistic imagination.

It's one of the most popular medieval Kisses in terms of art representations.

Lots and lots of Judas Kisses.

And then, of course, the Judas kiss becomes part of our cultural heritage.
