And so we think about betrayal and kissing as kind of going together.

And I think actually the reason it works is because of how important the kiss is anyway, like the mouth kiss.

We've already got that kind of really strong sense of it makes a union, it's a commitment, it's a sharing of souls.

So then to kiss and to do it under false pretenses and to make it into an act of betrayal just seems so much worse, right?

So all this great emotion kind of tying into that.

And then we can then see it appearing in all sorts of art over history where we use a kiss in the context of betrayal and we're all like, oh, all the emotion.

Hmm.

It's interesting, isn't it?

Because on the one hand, the godfather kiss isn't actually a kiss of betrayal, a kiss of punishment, a kiss of death, right?

Where because the person who does the kissing in that is the brother who was betrayed, the victim, right?

And he finds out that his brother's betrayed him and he goes in and then kisses him on the mouth with all love.

It's a beautiful scene.

A real force behind it.

He manages to make this really violent kiss.

And also it's interesting because it's New Year and all around them are people kissing each other on the cheeks.

And so you've got all this sign of happy kissing with this kiss on the mouth, which is also really forceful and aggressive as a sort of kiss that marks an end, that ends a relationship.

And I think it is...

But it's not quite the same as a Judas kiss because he wasn't the betrayer.

And then earlier in the scene, in the film, there's another scene that kind of suggests that puts the betraying brother in a Judas context because it's really great when the soldiers come into the room and they shoot the guy in the bed.

And all of that feels very like a biblical reference.
