failed to conform to expectations of femininity.

Now, schizophrenia was one of the conditions for which lobotomies were attempted.
and some physicians genuinely hoped the operation might relieve otherwise an untreatable psychosis, long before antipsychotic medications existed.
By modern standards, the procedure is devastating, often leaving patients profoundly disabled, and it has since become one of the most infamous chapters in psychiatric history.
the focus of this isn't that schizophrenia was treated with lobotomies or sedatives like we know that it's that the image of schizophrenia like before the civil rights era was overwhelmingly domestic it was the anxious housewife the withdrawn daughter the emotionally distant women who no longer fit neatly into society's expectations
good thing we've done all that research on women's health now good thing we know all about postpartum depression and menopause and all that research we've done into endometriosis and everything that's been done right again we're still focusing on white women like women like POC like they've had it much harder like it's just worse
