It's interesting, right?
Because...
Like, the amount that we know about the world in general, the fact that people are still confusing ethnicity, race and nationality, like, those are different things.
And also, race is a social construct designed to keep the boot on the neck of the marginalised.
But... Representation matters!
The photographs accompanying journal articles, educational materials and the pharmaceutical advertisements overwhelmingly featured white patients, usually white women.
Hospital case studies disproportionately centred on white Americans and the illness itself became culturally associated with whiteness.
Even more specifically,
Many portrayals focused on middle class white women.
So psychiatric literature of the day frequently described housewives who had become emotionally detached, withdrawn from family life, or unable to fill domestic roles society expected of them.
Now let's just take a wee second.
You know, to appreciate just how enthusiastically mid-century America responded to women who weren't coping particularly well with the impossible expectations placed upon them.
Feeling overwhelmed by being expected to be the perfect wife, the perfect mother, the perfect homemaker, impeccably dressed, permanently cheerful and somehow fulfilled by waxing the kitchen floor.
Well, have you tried sedatives?
Right, by the 50s and 60s, doctors were prescribing tranquilisers to women at astonishing rates.
Drugs like Miltown and Valium.
Like, these immortalised in the Rolling Stones song Mother's Little Helper, right?
