So the dominant image, right, it wasn't one of violence or aggression.
It was absence of emotion, social engagement and motivation.
Sounds a wee bit like certain flavours of autism, though, doesn't it?
I'm not trying to diagnose anybody.
I'm just saying.
So, if anything, schizophrenia was viewed as an illness of retreat rather than confrontation.
Now this distinction will become important later.
American psychiatric textbooks through the 1930s, the 40s and the 50s repeatedly emphasised these characteristics.
Hallucinations and delusions, they did feature in clinical descriptions, but they weren't always considered the defining characteristics as they are today.
Instead, it focused heavily on patients appearing disconnected from the world around them.
And who were these patients, according to psychiatric literature and popular media?
More often than not, they were white.
Not exclusively, of course.
That would be silly.
Because schizophrenia has never really respected racial boundaries.
People of every ethnicity and race have experienced this disorder.
