And the story, it doesn't even begin in America.
It starts in Europe.
Or a really good pasta dish.
So, at the turn of the 20th century, German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin discovered what he called the dementia precox.
Basically meaning early dementia.
He believed it was a disease that emerged in sort of, I say youngins, youths.
So adolescence or early adulthood.
and it would just inevitably result in mental decline.
Now, it didn't last long because in 1911, a Swiss psychiatrist, Eugène Bleuler, argued that Kraepelin had been too pessimistic, right?
Like patients didn't always experience this inevitable deterioration and their symptoms like varied massively.
So Bueller, he, Bueller, Bueller, Bueller, Bluler.
Listen, it's Swiss, it's hard to say.
It's full of holes.
So he coined a new term, schizophrenia, from the Greek words, you know, schizine meaning to split and phren meaning mind.
Contrary to popular culture's favourite misunderstandings, he wasn't describing multiple personalities.
He meant like the breaking up, the fragmentation of mental processes, thoughts, emotions and perceptions.
They kind of stopped working together in a coherent way.
That being said, this misconception somehow managed to survive for more than a century and at this point deserves its own frequent fly on my horse.
So throughout the first half of the 20th century, psychiatrists generally characterized schizophrenia through what today we'd call negative symptoms.
So like I said earlier, patients were described as emotionally withdrawn, socially isolated, passive, apathetic and detached from reality.
