society, cultural, they're all going to war.
There's conscription, there's all of this.
And televisions and radio communication is vast and so people are learning things more.
Communication is shared and people are understanding that you can rise up, you can fight, you can grow and evolve and get rights.
And women took a lot of jobs and helped industry survive during
the second world war and the first um but after which you know they're getting all these rights and they're told they can get educated and they can do a b and c and then they're pushed back into this this role and just like black america they were expected to fight for their country but weren't expected to have rights in that country which is like

So, much of psychiatric care, right, it consisted of observation, management, and containment, not really recovery.
And these hospitals reflected, basically, the broader inequalities in American society.
Segregation inside
psychiatric institutions.
Right.
It existed, just as it existed outside them.
Black patients were frequently treated in separate wards, admitted to underfunded hospitals, or just denied access to facilities available to white patients.
Resources were unequal.
Conditions were unequal.
Even medical records often differed in the level of detail physicians recorded.
So while schizophrenia was culturally imagined as a disease of white withdrawal, black Americans with serious mental illnesses certainly existed within the psychiatric system.
