At least, not yet.
Because...
Over the next two decades, as the civil rights movement transformed American society, psychiatry's image of schizophrenia would undergo a remarkable and troubling transformation.
The biology of the illness hadn't changed.
The patients hadn't suddenly become different.
But the stories America told about schizophrenia were about to change dramatically.
By the late 50s, America was changing.
Now, you know what?
Changing is a bit too gentle of a word.
Because it was being forced to confront contradictions it had spent generations pretending either doesn't exist or went quite as bad as everyone was making out.
It was, after all, the self-proclaimed leader of the free world.
The nation that had defeated fascism.
The beacon of democracy.
the country telling the Soviet Union about the importance of liberty, all while millions of its own citizens were legally segregated because of the colour of their skin.
And this contradiction was becoming more and more difficult to explain away.
And right, okay, the civil rights movement, it didn't just appear overnight.
Black Americans had resisted racial oppression for centuries.
But during the 1950s and 1960s, that resistance became impossible for much of white America to ignore.
In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.
