Now, sit-ins followed, Freedom Rides challenged, segregated interstate travel, you had students' marches, you had churches, they were organising, you had communities who were mobilised and television cameras captured it all and
This is the thing.
Perhaps for the first time, millions of white Americans watched peaceful demonstrators being attacked with police dogs, blasted with fire hoses, beaten by officers and arrested for simply demanding rights they had supposedly possessed all along.
Because the civil rights movement was not about creating injustice.
It was about exposing it.
And that is an important distinction.
Because while many Americans watched these events with sympathy, as did the rest of the fucking world, others saw something really different.
You know how they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder?
Well, so is everything.
Because your perception on how you see the world will reflect on how you think about it.
Because some people didn't see people standing up for themselves.
those with the boot upon their neck.
Instead they saw disorder, disruption and authority being challenged and for institutions built upon maintaining social order that was unsettling to say the least.
