Decades, and I do mean decades, of police brutality, discrimination, unemployment, poor housing and systemic neglect.
Harlem, Watts, Newark, Detroit.
Like, more than 100 cities experienced significant unrest during what newspapers increasingly described as race riots.
Because...
It wasn't a race riot.
It's like, we still use it today.
And sometimes I'll use it to name something so that people know what I'm talking about.
And then I'll go and explain it.
Because it's not a race riot.
It's a rebellion.
It's an urban uprising.
Because these events didn't just pop out of nowhere.
They weren't random explosions of chaos.
They were responses to inequalities and repeated confrontation with police and local authorities.
Now that doesn't mean that every act of violence is justified, right?
We know that.
Okay, don't play silly buggers with us.
People died.
Homes and businesses were destroyed and an entire neighbourhood suffered.
There's room to acknowledge both the structural injustices that fuelled these uprisings and the very real human they imposed.
