Supporters saw dignity, empowerment and protection and critics often saw militancy.
The media, unsurprisingly, tended to find the photographs of young black men carrying rifles considerably a bit more eye-catching than the pictures of children eating free breakfasts because conflict sells.
New ones always struggle to compete.
But for many white Americans, these overlapping crises created an overwhelming sense that the country was losing control.
