They don't tell us how every psychiatrist thought, nor do they prove that every doctor accepted these stereotypes.
But what they do reveal is advertising works by appealing to assumptions its audience already recognises.
Because marketers don't invent anxieties out of thin air.
That's what Fox News does.

They reflected racial stereotypes that were already circulating through American society and reinforced them.
And by the end of the decade, the transformation was remarkable.
A diagnosis associated with quiet withdrawal had become associated with confrontation.
One represented by white middle-class women was increasingly represented by black men.
Biology hadn't changed.
The brain hadn't changed.
But America?
