consequences don't exactly remain confined to textbooks it's because these these ideas weren't just appearing in journals and advertisements they were shaping real diagnoses affecting real patients admitted to real psychiatric hospitals now it's tempting to just file this neatly under well thank goodness we've moved up because history was probably a bit more comfortable if that was true but
History does have this annoying habit of lingering, not in obvious ways, sometimes in institutions, sometimes in statistics, sometimes in memories passed quietly from one generation to the next.
And nowhere is that perhaps more evident than in the relationship between black communities and the American healthcare system.
Because one of the lasting consequences of this is distrust.
Now, you'll often hear people talk about distrust of medicine in black communities as though it appeared out of nowhere.
As though someone woke up one morning and just decided doctors can't be trusted.
Because that's not how this works.
Because trust is built on experience.
And mistrust is built the same way.
And for many black Americans, medicine isn't just associated with healing.
It's associated with segregation.
The Tuskegee Syphilis Study.
Forced sterilisation.
Medical experimentation without consent.

periods when psychiatry interpreted you know responses to racism through the language of pathology doesn't mean that every doctor was racist it doesn't mean that psychiatry is like uniquely flawed it means that institutions are shaped by the societies in which they exist because if a society carries prejudice that's going to bleed into the institutions too
