So when I was in college.
But my main areas of focus are history and sociology.
But I do have a supplemental background in psychology and social geography.
Because it's all interlinked.
And so this is why, this is something I really, I wanted to talk about because this is the perfect time to do it.
And I understand that this is, oh God, it's a very dense episode as opposed to this happened and then that happened and the other happened.
But it's important and I was making this episode.
So yeah, yeah.
This month, BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, was established in the US to highlight the mental health experiences of Black, Indigenous and other peoples of colour.
It's not just about increasing access to therapy or encourage conversations about well-being, it's part of it, but it's about acknowledging history because people don't seek treatment in a historical vacuum.
And understanding why some communities distrust mental health institutions isn't about assigning blame to today's doctors.
Most psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health professionals, like most, are committed to providing ethical, evidence-based care.
But they have to know that that trust has to be earned.
Now,
Doctors don't stop being members of society when they put on a white coat.
Scientific progress doesn't happen in isolation from politics, culture or prejudice.
And researchers don't leave their assumptions at the lab door, right?
And diagnostic manuals
They're not gifts from fucking God.
They're not chiselled in stone tablets provided by the heavens.
