It's gotten better, but clinicians are also really aware of the ways bias can influence medical decision-making.
And I'm going to, okay, I'm going to throw some stats at you now because it's important.
Black patients are more likely to report not being believed.
And we see cases like this all the time.
22% of Black adults report that a healthcare provider did not believe they were telling the truth.
19% say a provider refused to test or treatment that they believed they needed.
18% report being refused pain medication.
And overall, 36% of black adults say that there was a time they believed they would have received better medical care if they were a different race.
One in four black adults report race-related discrimination while receiving healthcare.
Negative healthcare experiences made patients delay seeking care, switch providers, or avoid healthcare altogether.
And perhaps what's probably the clearest example of what happens when patients are not listened to is maternal health care.
Black women in the United States were three and a half times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women.
They had around five times the mortality rate from preeclampsia.
They had six times the risk of dying from postpartum cardiomyopathy.
This is still happening.
This is still happening today.
