Now, protest psychosis was never a legitimate psychiatric diagnosis.
It was, however, a disturbingly influential idea that emerged in the late 20th century as psychiatrists, law enforcement and broader social anxieties overlapped.
And during the civil rights movement, researchers proposed that black men involved in protests and activism were more likely to develop paranoid schizophrenia.
Now, this logic is
circular, right?
It is, it is wow.
Like, if you believed the state were surveying, targeting or oppressing black Americans, perhaps you were the one suffering from delusions.
History, of course, delivered one of its favourite plot twists.
The FBI really was surveying civil rights leaders.
Cointelpro really did exist.
Martin Luther King Jr.
really was wiretapped.
Turns out, accurately identifying institutional racism is not in fact a symptom of psychosis.
How embarrassing for the diagnostic criteria.
