And according to some, the truth is not just misadventure.

The Diné people have always known about the dangers of Nahanni Valley.

If the prospectors listened to their warnings, maybe they would have kept their heads.

We've talked a lot about the prospector's experience of the Nahanni Valley, but that's the outsider's perspective.

Diné oral tradition stretches back centuries into the past, before the first outsiders even set foot in the valley.

Some people think that their stories go as far back as the Stone Age.

For hundreds, maybe thousands of years, the Diné inhabited the lowlands near the Nahanni Valley, but never the valley itself.

The valley was the home of the Naha.

They were the first tribe in the area.

They were described as being aggressive and dangerous to their neighbors, and they would conduct regular raids on the other tribes.

We have oral tradition from those other tribes that have described this.

They would strike fast and then vanish back into caves along the mountains.

They were gone as fast as they were there.

In the Dene language, the Naha are referred to by a couple of different things, usually as the enemy.

Also, they're known as the people over there far away, the people of the setting sun, or the people who speak like ducks.
