Every summer, the Naha would attack.
And eventually, the Dene decided they just had to fight back.
They gathered a war party to take over and finally fight the Naha.
They ventured north into the valley, deep,
deep into Naha territory, the longer they walked, the stranger their expedition seemed because they didn't see a single enemy.
Finally, one of them spotted smoke from a campfire and they realized, this is it, we are headed into war.
The war party converged upon the campsite and found one of the Naha villages
but it was completely deserted.
The Naha, at least according to the Diné who would have understood the Naha's migration patterns, had simply vanished without a trace.
They should have been at this campsite.
By the time the European colonists arrived in the area in the early 19th century, the Naha were just a distant memory.
A Hudson's Bay company clerk wrote in January of 1807, quote, this tribe has abandoned the country on account of the encroachments of its present possessors.
This casual mention is the first written record that we have of the Naha.
And there are many theories about what happened to them.
Some people say that they might've been massacred or maybe they died off during a very harsh winter.
Others say they've simply migrated away.
And one theory holds that they traveled south to the Great Plains and actually became the Navajo people.
This theory is based on linguistic evidence actually, because apparently the Navajo language is very similar.
Whether they left or whether they disappeared, they were not the only ones living in that valley, if local folklore is to be believed.
And the other inhabitants seemed far older and far more dangerous.
