The ink had been washed off in the particularly wet spring, but a forensic team was able to lift the contents of the diaries.
They learned that a little ways into the flight, he made a mistake and he turned too soon and almost flew straight into the mountain.
He attempted to pull up, but a tree sheared off the Cessna's left wing and sent him plummeting into the slope.
McKenzie was very lucky though.
He climbed out almost completely uninjured.
Both of his thumbs were sprained and he had a wrenched back, but otherwise he was fine.
There was constant wind and snow.
I mean, it was the dead of winter, but he had reason for optimism.
There was plenty of food in the plane that he had.
He also had a hunting rifle and an ax to cut firewood.
He honestly could not have been more prepared to survive in the wilderness.
