The diary went on to say that he spent the next couple of days building a shelter near the downed aircraft.

He called for help using the aircraft's radio, which was still working.

Using a pen and a small notepad, he also kept a careful journal of his daily activities and his plans for survival.

By January 21st, two weeks and two days after the accident, he made up his mind.

He was going to hike for a cabin that he knew was in the area.

And he knew about this cabin because he had heard legends about it.

And it was actually a cabin that was supposed to be featured in his documentary called Starvation Cabin.

One of the stories Mackenzie wanted to explore in his documentary had happened barely two years earlier.

In September of 1959, five prospectors from Yellowknife went into the valley to look for gold near McLeod Creek.

They had a cabin, they had supplies, they were prepared to hunker down for this winter.

But that fall, they made a mistake.

They shot moose and caribou without having a hunting license.

And when authorities found out, they confiscated all of the meat.

literally all of it.

Officials checked that the men had enough store-bought food to last until the January supply plane, and then they left.

And that January plane never came.

The men waited, January turned into February, February became March, their food ran out, and something started to run out with it.

On March 17th, 1960, one of the men, a guy named Alex Miksonen, he walked out of the cabin into the woods, carrying the group's dynamite.

He never came back, but the men inside the cabin heard a loud blast in the distance.

After his death, two more of the group set out through the snow to find help, and they were never seen again.
