Launched what really quickly became one of the largest search and rescue operations in the history of British Columbia.
Cadaver dogs were brought in to sweep the surrounding forest.
Boats equipped with side-scanning sonar scoured the lake, all 128 acres of it, down to the deepest point.
Divers searched the lake beds and the nearby swamps.
Helicopters with infrared cameras flew low over the creeks, the gravel pits, the soft fields.
They were scanning for any sign of Maddie.
Search teams on horseback covered the trails and the backcountry.
And all of them found nothing.
Not a single footprint, not a piece of clothing, not a single trace of Maddie beyond the campsite that she had been sleeping in.
With the help of Maddie's family, investigators took a careful inventory of everything that she had left behind at the campsite and inside of her locked truck.
They examined all of the items.
There was the sleeping bag, her purse, her pillow, her camera, her jewelry.
Jewelry was also there.
Her family confirmed that nothing appeared to be missing except for Maddie's iPhone 4 in its blue protective case and a set of keys that she carried on a lanyard.
The phone and the keys were a detail that really stuck with investigators.
If Maddie had wandered off disoriented, if she had gotten in some kind of accident or medical event, if she had even gone for a walk and gotten lost, why would she have taken?
Her phone and keys, but left everything else behind.
Her purse, which her mom said she carried everywhere, that was still at the campsite.
Her truck was in working condition, had gas in it.
That was still parked where she'd left it.
