Robert was the only one who wasn't an officer, and this caused a lot of problems.
When Mahoney ordered Robert to fetch him some roots, Robert refused.
He said no.
He was done taking orders from someone who let every man under his command die without showing a single sign of leadership, who sat on his butt while men died trying to bring him water.
Mahoney didn't like this answer.
He pulled a knife on Robert, but he was so weak, he wouldn't have been able to drive it into the man, and Robert just turned around and walked away when he was threatened.
And then a few days later, Captain Delgarno and Mahoney made a trip out, but only Delgarno came back.
Mahoney was gone.
The men decided to leave Hardwick and search for food elsewhere.
There was nothing left on this island.
However, Mahoney stayed behind.
He had a really bad blister on his foot that was preventing him from walking.
And so he wrapped it up and he said that he would follow when he was healed and could walk again.
So now there were just three.
The remaining three men now settled into this uneasy truce.
They needed each other to survive, but Robert had no interest in pretending that the officers still had authority over him.
The group argued constantly.
Months passed, spring finally came and the island had a little bit more to keep them alive.
There were a few more seals on the beaches, a couple more birds that they found in the scrub, but they could never really relax or feel optimistic.
They always knew that the next winter was right around the corner.
