She had come from China carrying laborers to South America, and actually a plague that was on the ship killed a number of the crew.
But the survivors of the Invercold would rather take their chances on a plague-ridden ship than spend another night with each other on Auckland Island.
Before the Julian's boat reached the shore, the captain pulled Robert aside and he told him, stay quiet, don't say anything.

Delgarno and Smith, the officers, were given new clothes, comfortable quarters, and the treatment that their rank entitled them to.
Robert, who had done more to keep them alive than either of them was capable of doing, was sent below deck with the crew.
