But after everything, he was just happy to be alive.

Three men walked off that island out of 25 that were originally on the ship.

Now, Dalgarno wrote his account of the shipwreck first.

He published his story in August of 1865.

Smith followed a year later, writing his own account.

And neither of these men mentioned Robert in their writings.

If you read about their experience on the island, they never mentioned Robert.

What a sad ending, right?

It totally sucks for Robert.

But I'm gonna twist the knife a little deeper because Robert Holding was lost to history, but he wouldn't have been if everyone had just listened to him.

Because Robert wanted to head to the other end of the island,

It was like something was pulling him in that direction, and he was trying his best to get everyone to follow him.

Despite the rugged terrain, despite how much everyone was dying, he really wanted to keep forging ahead.

And it wouldn't be revealed until much later, but on the other end of Auckland Island, at the exact same time that the Invercauld crew was there, there was another shipwreck, another group of stranded men, only their story ended very differently.

That ship was called the Grafton, and she was a 56-ton schooner, barely a tenth of the size of the Invercauld.

Five men made it ashore, and all five of them lived.

It was the night of January 2nd, 1864, five months before the Invercauld sank.

The Grafton was a schooner so small you could fit her inside the Invercauld's cargo hold, and she was sheltering from a storm in Carnley Harbor, a bay off the southern coast of Auckland Island.
