Musgrave led these hunting parties.
Raynal threw himself into designing their shelter, despite the fact that he couldn't even stand at that point.
He actually figured out that if you super heat seashells, the calcium oxide that they produce can be mixed with sand to make a kind of cement.
So that's what he did.
He burned shells, he mixed mortar, and he used it to build a proper stone hearth.
And then he assembled timber from the Grafton's remains and the surrounding forest to build
this pretty decent cabin within 31 days of the shipwreck they had a home and they also started interior designing this place they built shelves for their tools and the handful of books that they still had they built a stone chimney that actually worked and they had a door that they could open and shut they called this cabin epic weight
And now, with the immediate crisis of survival handled, the three sailors pushed back against the rank that they all had on the ship.
They decided that they were going to democratically elect who was going to be the leader of the group, and it didn't necessarily have to be the captain of the ship.
They also drew up a code of conduct and wrote it on a blank page of Musgrave's Bible, and Raynal nominated Musgrave to be the leader of their settlement, and he was elected unanimously.
And then they came up with a plan to deal with their boredom.
After dark, they didn't really have anything to do but eat seal meat, stare into the fire, and contemplate the possibility that no one was ever gonna come save them.
So they decided that they were gonna start basically a makeshift school inside of this cabin.
Musgrave taught the sailors to read and write.
Raynal taught French and math to everyone.
McLaren taught Norwegian.
Forges taught Portuguese.
They would sit around the hearth in the evenings, these five guys from five different countries,
teaching each other how to conjugate verbs in each other's languages.
