By the time the first anniversary of the wreck arrived in January of 1865, they finally had to face the fact that rescue was not coming.

And so they started to form a plan.
They had timber, sailcloth, scrap metal, and they had Raynal, who at that point had already built a stone hearth, a cement kiln, and a functional cabin.
Building a boat wasn't a question of skill.
It was going to be a question of tools that they had.
First, Raynal built a forge.
He used the ship's cooking bellows and heated scrap iron from the Grafton until it glowed bright, and then he hammered out nails.
Then he tried to make a boring tool to drill holes and fasten a hole together.
He tried and he failed.
different techniques failed again, weeks of work on this forge, and he could not manufacture the proper tools to build it, but the seals were growing scarcer.
They knew that by the time the second winter came, there was gonna be way less food than the first.
