And inside one of those buildings, Musgrave found a body.
It was a man, or at least what was left of him.
He had clearly died a while ago, but Musgrave could see that one foot was wrapped in these woolen rags.
The man was laying near a roofing slate, it was the kind that you use in construction, and scratched onto the surface of that slate in handwriting that was almost completely illegible.
It was a single word that he could make out.
It was just a name, Musgrave.
Musgrave had no idea who this man was.
He didn't know how he got there or how he died.
He didn't know that the settlement he was standing in was Hardwick, the same ruins that the Invercalde's crew had stumbled upon eight months earlier.
He didn't know about the Invercalde at all.
He recorded the discovery in his journal, the body, a slate with a scratch name written into it, and then he and his men sailed back to New Zealand.
Now, I probably don't have to tell you this, but the man on the floor was James Mahoney, second mate of the Invercalds, the man Captain Delgarno had left behind at Hardwick with a bad foot.
But what's even more wild is Musgrave and Raynal had no idea about any of this.
No one had told them about the Invercald when they went back to New Zealand.
It actually wasn't until November 8th of 1865
months after their rescue, that Musgrave encountered Raynal in Melbourne.
He showed him something that he had found in a newspaper the previous evening.
It was a story entitled, Narrative of the Wreck of the Invercalde on the Auckland Islands by Captain Delgarno.
Two shipwrecks, same island, same year, 20 miles apart.
And the only place the two stories ever touched was a building of a previously abandoned community and a body that had been left behind.
