Sure, the Grafton did get lucky.
They had more resources from the start and a lot more food available than the Invercalde, but they had something else that the Invercalde just didn't have.
Friendship.
Okay, I'm kind of kidding, but I'm also kind of not kidding.
The men kept morale high and they looked out for each other.
They didn't cling to their stupid ranks from before, which is partly what did the Inver called in.
So it was friendship, but also about 30 times the amount of resources.
Robert was the newest, he was the lowest-ranking man aboard, an outsider in a Scottish crew, and the officers refused to follow his lead even as their own inaction was killing everyone around them.
And Dalgarno never recovered from losing his ship.
He clung to his rank as if it were a life raft, and it turned out to be an anchor instead.
I'm gonna keep this ship metaphor going.
The Grafton crew worked together.
They built a cabin, a forge, a government, a school, and a boat.
And at the end of a year on the island, the only thing the Invercald crew built was one lean-to.
This story is sometimes referred to as the tale of two shipwrecks.
And it gets put in PowerPoints by management consultants and business schools as a leadership case study.
But that's maybe too simplistic of a way to look at it.
Maybe it's the friends we make along the way, or maybe it's having access to a gun and more seals.
