He's almost a point-per-game player in the AHL.
He's only 22 years old.
He's a guy who they're making a bet on that they think could potentially rise above expectations, and that's the perfect kind of bet because he doesn't cost much in terms of salary, and a fourth-round draft pick is very random if that player's going to hit or not.
So I think a lot of what he's done this offseason is reshape the team.
He didn't sign Simone Nemec to a long-term contract, so he kept that cap flexibility, which I think is important as you look that he signed a five-time $7.2 million AAV deal.
So a lot of these moves is just about being flexible, giving positional flexibility, and then giving Sheldon Keefe as much matchup opportunity as he wants.
And they added a coaching analytics position in their front office too, which is very rare in the NHL.
So I think a lot of looking at these matchups and how to deploy the roster is going to be a big emphasis this season and looking at the chemistry in which players kind of gel with certain players who has better underlying numbers as a line.
So I think a lot of that is going to come into play, and I think the Devils could succeed because of that.
It's not just the players, too.
It's the contracts that Carolina has signed those guys to like the Jackson Blakes of the world, like the Logan Stankovans, like they're taking these guys when they're not at their peak value and they're signing them to long term deals, low AAV.
And it really allows them to have a ton of cap flexibility.
But then in addition to that, they're making really good draft picks.
So they have guys like a Bradley to do like a Felix Unger, who
are now really interesting trade pieces if they want to move those guys.
So they have a lot of assets.
And I think more organizations have to think of their prospects as assets, as opposed to guys that are potentially going to develop into your system.
